Dave Grohl's Sound City Players, Sundance Film Festival, review
The film is an exhilarating exploration of the creative process. Grohl has secured exceptional access to musicians normally secretive about their working methods. The biggest coup was a session with Paul McCartney. Describing his entry to the studio, the film’s cinematographer Kenny Stoff said, “there was a tangible electricity in the air and it was all I could do not to just freak out. Here I was in the same room as Nirvana and The Beatles. Heavy!”
Starting with some random jamming, we watch drummer Grohl take McCartney out of his knighted comfort zone, and coax the best song out of him since Helter Skelter. It’s an angry track called Cut Me Some Slack, on which McCartney plays a bizarre “cig-fiddle”.
To celebrate the film’s premiere, and to preview the album, Grohl assembled a supergroup of 17 musicians, Sound City Players, for a one-off concert. The event attracted huge attention. Tickets were changing hands for $1,500 each; journalists were excluded. I sneaked in as a plus-one of a bass player’s former publicist.
