Hamilton middle schoolers learn that 'woodshop rocks'

HAMILTON — By the end of the semester, these students will be ready to rock.

At a new woodshop class at Grice Middle School, about 30 eighth-graders have spent the entire semester building electric guitars and ukuleles, part of a semester-long woodshop course called “Woodshop Rocks!”

“These kids are much more talented than they’re given credit for,” said Michael Friedman, the woodshop teacher turned guitar tech. “When I started teaching woodshop, they were doing napkin holders and the stereotypical woodshop projects. I know they’re capable of more highly advanced work.”

After a month of safety lessons in September, the students have been building their guitars from start to finish, starting with a block of wood and soon ending up with fully-functional guitars modeled after the Fender Stratocaster or Gibson Les Paul.

By the end of the school year, students will have built 39 guitars and 13 ukuleles, Friedman said.
